Mike Trim

Since1964, I have been involved in various aspects of art, as a designer illustrator and teacher. Much of my professional activities involved the production of detailed artwork using gouache and, even the somewhat less detailed pieces for book covers still required a tight realistic approach which luckily favoured my natural style. As time has gone by, however, I have grown more and more admiring of artists whose work is much looser and impressionistic and have embarked on a journey to try and develop my own approach along these lines. This has not come easily and, even now, I have to be careful not to let my default style creep back in. To facilitate this change I have developed a mixed media approach combining acrylics with watercolour pencils and crayons, as well as gouache. I find this combination of media forces me to adopt a somewhat broader approach and makes it harder, though sadly not impossible, to get bogged down in too much detail. For my subjects I have looked predominantly to the East Kent area for inspiration and, living in the countryside with the sea almost on my doorstep and a bustling city and towns close by, there has been plenty to choose from. Occasionally I have gone further afield, as with Paris, but time and again I find new inspiration looking afresh at things closer to home. My journey is by no means complete and there is still a fair way to go, but like most artists I hopefully continue to explore and develop the way I work. And, as I love what I do, I hope that that is something that will continue for a long time yet.
